SA8000 describes 8 criteria, to which the companies seeking certification must comply. Besides the criteria the companies are also required to set up an adequate management system to secure compliance and the necessary documentation of the activities of the company and its main suppliers and some requirements for internal policies and communication both internal and external as is also the case in many ISO standards.

The 8 criteria are covering:
-Child Work
-Forced Labour
-Health and Safety
-Freedom of Organising
-Discrimination
-Disciplinary practices
-Working Hours
-Remuneration

In each of these criteria are describes the requirements of the company, considered the local circumstances in different countries and areas of the production. The standard describes a minimum level, and also requires continuously improvement by the company.

The companies seeking certification must abandon child work and secure that their young workers (15-17 years of age) are not exposed to hazardous, unsafe or unhealthy work. The minimum remuneration given to employees must be sufficient to cover their basic needs and to meet legal minimum wage for the relevant industry. The workplace shall be healthy and safe, and the companies commit to improvement of this area. The normal work week shall not exceed 48 hours on a regular basis and overtime must be compensated at prime rate.
